Euro candidate Senator Rónán Mullen has called on Minister Shatter to recognise that the closure of provincial barracks is proving to be a false economy.
Senator Mullen said:
“Towns like Mullingar, Longford, Monaghan, and Cavan have been left devastated by barracks closures and the effect on members of the Defences Forces and their families severe.”
“Defence Forces personnel who had invested in family homes in these towns now face long commutes to their new postings. Those who invested in property at the height of the boom may now find that because they are in negative equity, they simply cannot afford to move their families to a location closer to their place of work.”
When this issue came before the Seanad, I pointed out that while we’ve little control over multinationals relocating, we have full control over the closure of army barracks. What we are dealing with here are Defence Forces families, real people experiencing genuine hardship.”
“This Government has been happy to pay lip service to the idea of maintaining jobs outside Dublin but at the same time by these barrack closures is prepared to deprive provincial towns of much-needed quality employment,” Senator Mullen concluded.
