Independent Senator and European Election Candidate Senator Rónán Mullen has said that the issue of labelling of food has broad ramifications for Irish agriculture, and the EU and Irish Government must push for greater transparency in meat industry labelling in particular.
“I have been meeting with local butchers and farmers across the Midlands North West. Their customers want to shop local and buy local produce, but how can people do this when labelling in large multinational supermarkets can be misleading. Food is often labelled as ‘produced in Ireland’ leading people to believe the produce is Irish meat when it is simply processed here. The EU Commission has a duty and responsibility to Irish consumers. There is no reason why food labelling cannot be changed at a European level to promote transparency for Irish consumers.”
